About Raw Talent Builders Athletics

Who We Are

Raw Talent Builders Athletics

Andrea Lorenez, David Edwards, and Wayne Wooten were a coaching staff for Girls High School Basketball at Bonita Vista High School in the city of Chula Vista, Ca. from 2004 -2014. Each coach with other assistant coaches throughout Coach Wooten’s tenure served and coached over 600 students/athletes. After, going to San Diego C.I.F. finals in Division 1 the three had a dream of working as a team in the future to serve the youths in the communities of San Diego County. In 2021 we met and decided it was time to fulfill our dream of giving back to the community. Dave Edwards and Andrea Lorenez went on to pursue and are still thriving in the real estate market as second careers. After, retiring from coaching at Bonita Vista High School Wayne Wooten traveled and visited relatives across the country.

We did research in the area where I was living in Escondido and found out a decrease of females 13-18 age group were 75% less likely to compete in sports through High School. Escondido is an underserved area which added easily another 15% drop.

We decided in looking at the disparity of age, race, gender, and family composition in Escondido.

We decided to start a nonprofit organization Raw Talent Builders (RTB) a sports program with the necessary resources to have equal opportunities for organized sports.

Our goal is

To Provide a Safe Active Space So Children and Teens Can Come, Create Bonds, Learn Useful Life Skills, and Feel the Adrenaline in Every Game

Our camps are for children between the ages of 13 to 18 years old, especially girls, teaching them efficient basketball techniques and helping them prevent issues like depression or obesity while also cultivating good behaviors. We have a deep commitment to helping our youth.  We have a youth-oriented approach in our basketball camp. Our top priority is making sure children are creating meaningful memories and developing physical and mental skills.

David started his coaching career with the Chula Vista Police Athletic League (PAL) – from 1996-1999. Working with high-risk youths in the South Bay Area (National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, and San Diego). David not only taught the fundamentals of the game that he learned growing up in Mississippi.

He was able to guide young men in dealing with life situations and challenges that they could possibly face as adults. David continued coaching at the high school level for about 10 years. He was an assistant Girls Basketball Coach at Bonita Vista High School where he was instrumental in developing stand-out talented players such as Elissa Magracia, Jamesha Townsend, Danielle Boykin, Whitney Boykin, Nadia Cruz, and Shyla Latone. After, stepping down from coaching in 2014 David went on to work full-time in real estate.

David is passionate about giving back to the community by working with the youth which Raw Talent Builders Athletics is set up to do.

Wayne Wooten

Co-founder of Raw Talent Builders Athletics 2022-Present

Wayne Wooten started coaching youth basketball while working in Law Enforcement for over 25 years starting with the San Diego Police Department and later finishing with Chula Vista Police Department.

He went on to be the head coach for the Bonita Vista High School Girls program from 2002-2014. He led the Bonita Vista to eight C.I.F. playoff appearances, reaching the finals twice. After, being away from coaching for two years he became an assistant coach with the girls’ basketball program at Escondido High School under Chris Williams.

After reuniting with Dr. Andrea Lorenez and David Edwards, we decided to put the band back together. All three of us have grown after leaving Bonita Vista High in 2014. We know that our life experiences would be valuable in teaching life lessons to the youth of the communities that we serve.

After, brainstorming we decided to start a nonprofit organization to provide outreach to the youths starting with sports as a classroom. Even though we will start with basketball, our vision is to expand into Track & Field, Softball, and general health. Our goal is to help build good citizens for society.
